Domain Name Self-Appraisal

Monday, December 26, 2005 at 8:30 am By: Mark

I happened across a post on WebMasterWorld.com from 2002 called Self Domain Appraisal — the do it yourself test, that I thought was pretty good. A member wrote up 13 metrics to use to self-appraise a domain name. The thread contains comments from other users. She has you assign points to each metric, and the the total points determine the estimated, approximate value for the name. The post is three and a half years old so the assigned dollar value is most likely off due to inflation and changes in the market. But, the metrics still hold. Take a look.

HillaryWatch.com sold for $1,750! My HillaryAlert.com/org just $475!

Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 11:06 am By: Mark

My last post alerted you to the auction of my HillaryAlert.com/org domain names. It has a Buy Now price of $900 and has met it’s reserve of $450 with $475 as the next bid. But listen to this–I see that HillaryWatch.com just sold for $1,750 at Afternic on 12/19! HillaryWatch.com/HillaryAlert.com…what’s the difference. Looks like I should have valued my domain name $1,000 or so higher! My loss is your gain. Pick it up for $900 (or less) and resell it for $1,750 or more. And, it’s not even the election cycle yet. And you get two domain names!

Maybe I’ll even buy it back myself and pay the fee to Afternic and put it up for sale again at a higher price, or just wait a couple years and sell it for 10X. Auction ends Christmas Eve morning. Here’s the auction page.

I’m Practically Giving Away HillaryAlert.com!

Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 10:21 am By: Mark

The reserve price for my premium name HillaryAlert.com (includes HillaryAlert.org) has been met at Afternic and has entered a 7-day auction, ending on Christmas Eve. I really should have waited until the election cycle starts when the value will skyrocket. But, I wanted to do a test on Afternic, by setting the reserve price to the latest offer price, thereby causing it to be featured as one of the few “ending soon” auctions on the front page. I was antsy and did it with this name. I’ll probably live to regret it.

It’s a great buy for any domain investor–even those who only buy wholesale– so if you are interested, go to the auction page. I can’t see how anyone won’t profit on this name even if they take the Buy Now price.

Did I hear someone ask, “Is she running?” LOL! You got to be kidding! She’s been running for this office ever since she married Bill. It’s a lock.

My Bad Experience with Domain Contractors.com

Thursday, December 8, 2005 at 5:00 am By: Mark

I just had a bad experience trying to buy a name from a domain seller. Since they have nearly 1,000 names for sale there’s a chance you may encounter them so I wanted to share with you what happened. It’s an interesting story and if you are a domain investor, I urge you to read it all. In a nutshell, the representative would not sell me the domain for the advertised price, trying to get me for another 233%.

The web site name is DomainContractors.com, on which they list the domain names they have for sale. I’ve researched the company and I see that they are associated with Corporate-Image.com, a firm that sells toll-free phone numbers.

Here’s the story:

New! DomainsBotLabs Offer Massive Statistical Data and Brainstorming Tools

Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at 2:21 pm By: Mark

DomainsBot.com, a very nice domain name brainstorming site I previously wrote about, has some intriguing new applications they’ve put together and placed in their new DomansBotLabs section. They will provide you with considerable statistics and tools to help you better design your name selection criteria. The site is wonderfully designed for your immediate understanding of how to proceed, the data is laid out clearly and the tools are simple to use.

Word Trends
Type in a keyword and you will get a graph showing the domains registered (within the major TLDs ) over time that contain that keyword. You can select additional keywords to include in the graph to view their relative popularity. For example, entering Coke and Pepsi shows two trend lines with similar growth rates, but the number of Coke names registered is nearly twice that of Pepsi.

Domain Stats
This page shows a series of statistical data, graphs, trendlines and conclusions regarding the value of domain names given various aspects of the name. Reports include number of domains sold and values of domains sold by length, number of keywords; and parts of speech. There are 38 figures in all! Really, there is a lot of valuable data here.

Search Cloud
This cool tool provides a dynamic “visual cloud” that suggests new available domain names based on relationships between keywords in existing domain names. It’s difficult to really describe how the results are displayed, so just try it out.

Split-it
As readers of this blog know from reading our wildly popular Hilarious Domain Name Mispronouncings article, there can sometimes be an unintentional double meaning for a domain name if keywords are split in different ways. For a famous example, ExpertsExchange.com also reads ExpertSexChange.com. Use Split-it to avoid these embarrassing and costly mishaps. As you type the word, the Visual Splitter will show you the various possibilities and tell you which is likeliest.

There is also another application called Shadow. It’s not a tool, but a small piece of software that you download on to your computer that will work in a distributed computing fashion to help DomainsBot crunch the massive data in order to better provide more free statistical reporting to you. It works similarly to the Berkeley University’s Seti program, if you are familiar with that. Shadow is not something in which you have to participate to get their reports.

It’s apparent a lot of work went into the DomainsBotLabs project and the quality of their work and the sheer volume of data reflect that. My hat is off to these guys and look forward to see what further tools and information they will bring to us in the future.

AllTheBeerYou CanDrink.com

Monday, December 5, 2005 at 6:33 pm By: Mark

I peruse the domain name listings from various sources each day. I came across one today that I just had to let you all know about! It’s AllTheBeerYouCanDrink.com and it’s only one million dollars. Quick! Check your account to see if you have the spare change, and then click on the link and get your bid in before it’s gone! The seller is so sure of the brandability of this name that he hasn’t even bothered to park it for PPC income. Who needs that when he can turn a $10 registration into $1,000,000? Think of all the type-in traffic he’s not capitalizing on–there must be thousands of people typing that six word domain name in daily.

LOL!

Favorite Buys from Last Week

Monday, December 5, 2005 at 9:06 am By: Mark

Here are my favorite buys from last week. You can see all of the names on my Latest Buys page. I’m particularly excited that I was able to purchase RoboHuman.com for just $10 (no other bidders) on tdnam.com. With the advent of Robo-everything now being sold or developed (witness hot-selling RoboSapien and RoboRaptor in stores now), I was shocked a name like RoboHuman was so easy to get; a product of this name will surely be developed some day. If not, all of us will be eventually part robot anyway so this name terrific. If you think I’m out of my mind, read The Singularity is Near, by Ray Kurzweil.

Thanks to My GoldKey Referrals!

Thursday, December 1, 2005 at 2:52 pm By: Mark

A couple weeks ago I published the article, Moving My Parking to Goldkey. In that article, I asked that anyone who wanted to sign up with Goldkey to please use my referral link as it doesn’t reduce your earnings whatsoever. In return I would be happy to provide you with any tech support for using Goldkey you might need. I’ve have a half dozen people sign up using my referrer id and I just wanted to say thank you.

I urge everyone to try Goldkey. I won’t go into all the reasons again; you can read the original article if you haven’t already. If you do, please use this link (or any other in this article) to help support this site, and to receive free tech support from me.
